The Basin Theatre, ABN: 12 396 78 8687
The Basin Theatre Group was formed in 1954, the brainchild of founders Edna Chandler MBE and husband Fergus Chandler, whose vision to bring live theatre to the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges was born in the loungeroom of their home in The Basin.
As the group grew, productions were staged initially at the Basin Progress Hall, later in the Hut performance space in Doongalla Road and since 1973 in our very own 125 seat, purpose-built theatre on the corner of Doongalla Road and Simpsons Road in The Basin.
Edna and Fergus’ vision of bringing quality theatre productions to the stage has been upheld for over 70 years and this award-winning theatre continues to thrill our audiences.
The current committee of management carries on the tradition and vision of our founders by delivering an exciting mix of comedy and drama to our growing audiences. We continue to expand our repertoire by presenting professional comedy evenings, children’s theatre and special musical events, in addition to our regular seasons.
We are committed to providing our audiences with a stimulating mix of shows, highlighting the talents of our playwrights, actors, stage crews, Front-of-House workers and technical crews.
We strive to include the opportunity for local Australian playwrights to stage their works whilst also staging popular and well-known plays from around the globe.
In addition to staging productions, we offer opportunities to become involved with this dynamic and inclusive theatre group with training in lighting, sound, stage management, acting and directing, and welcome all those interested in theatre to join us in ensuring the ongoing viability of our group.
Our volunteer members are committed to ensuring our audience has a memorable night out, enjoying our hospitality and the excitement and thrill only live performances can deliver.
We offer free parking, a free programme, a welcome sherry on arrival, and complimentary tea and coffee at interval.
Our fully licenced bar is available before, at interval and after the conclusion of the performances and serves a range of snacks, soft drinks, water and alcoholic beverages at bar prices.
We hope you can join us for an evening or two to take in the ambience and welcome that only community theatre can deliver or perhaps join as a member and become involved in this exciting community theatre space.
